This is a story about person dealing with weight issues and how excellently he has defeated them. This story highlights the fact that weight issues are not only for appearances but for your long-term health.
Like any other day, I went to my evening walk that day too, but who knew that a seemingly normal day is going to be a big day for somebody else.
As I was passing through a park, I saw a boy sitting alone at a bench, he was hardly 25 years old. By looking at him, I nearly went into a flashback, I saw my younger self in him. But he was sobbing very badly. When I came closer to look into the matter, I saw his eyes were red too. By seeing me, he became a little hesitant and turned his face. I sat next to him and I said, “I know how that feels.” And on that he replied immediately, “you really don’t know, please leave me alone!” I said, “trust me! I do know” and I showed him a picture on my phone and said, “I’ve been there” and I began my story!
During my college life, my friends never treated me the way I look, I never felt anything. But as the time passed and I started working in Gujarat, I gained more weight because I was away from my home and had to eat outside constantly. I worked in the chemical industry that was not suiting my health and I did not enjoy working there. So, I decided to switch to software industry and moved to Hyderabad but till then my weight has already started increasing more. I joined a coaching for Data Analytics training. The junk food continued. In the period of six months, it can be said that I ate only junk food for three months and guess what would have happened to my weight. I started some exercises like I used to up and down from the staircase but I stopped soon because I was not able in my job. I postponed that for a while. “See people never made fun of you, you never faced humiliation. I did!” the boy said to me. I said, “just listen to me patiently.”
I got a job in the IT sector in Hyderabad only. After that I started making efforts, I joined the gym of my office but I never went there. I started having constipation problems and the work stress increased my weight even further. My weight was 106 kgs in the September of 2017. My brother’s marriage was approaching so I have to go home and I was scared. When I went there, people said to me that you have changed but did not specifically indicated towards my weight, however one of my cousin brothers came up to me and said, “don’t take any offence, but you've become very fat.” At that moment my family was present there and I felt really bad. When I came back to Hyderabad, I joined the gym for which I paid five thousand, thinking, that if I will pay, I might go. I went for ten days but then again that old story continued.
Rice had become my staple food and my weight was increasing more. There was a wedding again and I have gone back home in December 2018. This time I could not collect the courage of facing people and did not go out. But this time, my own mother said that you have gained too much. I consulted a doctor who said if I did not do anything now, I might get appendix, I was having cholesterol problems too, then my father interfered and made me understand about my ignorance towards health. My journey started from there!
I joined a gym again, they introduced me to a fitness trainer, called Saif, he did not ask me to control my diet but told me to reduce junk from my diet and I was eating huge amount of that while exercising. My weight was 116 kgs. After ten days, he asked me to weigh myself and I had eaten a lot. It was still 116 kgs and he increased my workout then I realised if I am putting so much effort to get the result, my diet has to be controlled. It was the strategy of my trainer to make me realise the importance of diet.
I made my diet plan with guidance of the trainer, In the morning, I started having tofu, boiled in a paste of spinach, coriander and mint with 2 rotis and 5 egg whites and before lunch, I used to eat a fruit bowl that was available in the office itself. For the lunch, I used to have diet thali consisting daal, some vegetables and 2 rotis. In the evening, I had black coffee and some nuts and for the dinner, I used to have peanut butter with two breads, one egg and an apple.
How you drastically changed your diet? Did you not crave for those things?” asked the boy. “I’ll tell you, just wait!” After 15 days, I had a cheat meal, a full-fledged meal that gave me 1 kg weight added to my body. Then I realised, how quickly my weight increased with that one meal and later I learnt to manage it by reducing the calorie intake of the succeeding day and increased my workout. My weight was reducing by 7 kgs per month, but then it stopped and I revised my diet plan. I removed daal and roti and started having oats along with one apple and 5 egg whites and shifted the green tofu in the lunch, the fruit bowl and black coffee was there. Also, I was having tofu in the dinner too or salads. In all this process, I fainted once while coming back from the gym because I reduced my diet further. One of my gym acquaintances took care of me and Saif increased my calories and watched me more closely. I realised that skipping meals was not an option. The way he was putting so much effort in me, inspired me even more. After all this my weight was 96 kgs and I was quite happy with the results.
One day I went to the airport to meet my friend’s sister and give her Biryani. Later, I got my friend’s call and he said that his sister was saying that I've gained a lot of weight. I told him that I was going through my transformation period but did not tell him about my weight in numbers. However, this incident opened my eyes that I still have a long way to go.
I started going to gym twice, added multi vitamins and protein powder in my diet. By April 2019, I was 83 kgs and now I am 77 kgs. My inspiration was Guru mann, I do not know if you have heard of him or not but he is one of the best in the field of fitness. There is nobody in this field like him, if you really want to get inspiration, he is the person you need to look for.
Balancing your diet and doing proper workouts can do wonders. Find a good trainer for yourself. Also, do not ever ignore proteins, as essential in the working out process. Remember it does not matter how others see you, you should be the best in your eyes. The thing you should take from me is, health is very important, you will have to work on it eventually in future, so why not today.
“Your turning point was that call, mine is this conversation. Thank you so much, I needed this today” and by saying that, he went away with a glow on his face.
